For those that may be entertaining the thought of either installing a fireplace or remodeling the one they have into something more personally appealing and not so standard, there are many more options available than most may think. The original and main purpose of fireplace grates were for holding logs and kindling and so air was able to flow underneath the wood, helping the fire to start quicker. This variety includes but is not limited to decorative fireplace grates, iron fireplace grates for durability and even multifunctional versions such as a fireplace grate heater. There are also grates that have expandable sections. These sections are usually eight inches wide and equipped with only one leg for support, making it a quick and easy process to put them together and obtain the desired width.
There is also a self feeding fireplace grate that enables you to get the maximum amount of heat in a more direct way. The racks of the grate are adjustable so that when rotated properly they create a wall the heat bounces off and is sent out into the room. The logs can be stacked in such a way that as the bottom logs burn the upper one falls down and replaces them as they burn, keeping the fire going continuously and automatically.
